Spring has sprung, baby!
It’s the perfect time of year to sit indoors and watch movies.
May is full of some super great releases, as well as lots of opportunity (for me at least) to catch up on some franchises before their final chapters hit theatres and hopefully get my Letterboxd watchlist down from 1,130 films.
FRANCHISE BINGES - ‘FINAL DESTINATION’
I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed the first ‘Final Destination’ film when I kicked off my franchise binge-watching a few days ago. With ‘Final Destination: Bloodlines’ hitting theatres on May 16th, I’ve got about 14 days to watch the remaining 4 films in the franchise!
Watch ‘Final Destination’ for free here on DailyMotion.
Watch ‘Final Destination 2’ for free here on DailyMotion.
Watch ‘Final Destination 3’ for free here on DailyMotion.
Buy/rent ‘Final Destination 4’ here.
Buy/rent ‘Final Destination 5’ here.
FRANCHISE BINGES - ‘ MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE’
I got bit by the popcorn-movie bug after seeing the first ‘Mission: Impossible’ movie, and now I am determined to see the remaining 6 (I watched Mission: Impossible 2 the other day) so I can see ‘Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning’ on the big screen, baby! That’s the type of movie you see with your dad!
‘Mission: Impossible’ 1 to 7 are available to watch on Paramount+.
NEW TO ME - LET’S GET LYNCHIAN
Re: My piece on seeing 5 David Lynch movies in theatres, I need to check off the final feature films in his filmography (that he fully wrote and direct). Those films would be ‘The Elephant Man’ and ‘Inland Empire’.
I also would really like to watch some more of David Lynch’s short films, and will be checking out the collection ‘The Short Films of David Lynch’ which contains: ‘Six Figures Getting Sick (Six Times)’, ‘The Alphabet’ (which will be a rewatch for me), ‘The Grandmother’, ‘The Amputee’, ‘The Cowboy and the Frenchman’, and ‘Premonitions Following an Evil Deed’.
‘The Elephant Man’ is party rockin’ (available) over on the Internet Archive for free.
‘Inland Empire’ is streaming on the Criterion Channel.
‘The Short Films of David Lynch’ can be found on the Criterion Channel and probably on YouTube. (Update 5/9/25: Found them all here on the Internet Archive)
NEW MOVIES I REALLY WANT TO SEE THIS MONTH
‘Bring Her Back’ is the newest film from ‘Talk To Me’ writers and directors Danny and Michael Philippou. I watched ‘Talk To Me’ last year and it was one of the first horror films I watched in a long time that actually scared me and made me want to look away/take a breather.
“Following the death of their mother, a brother and sister are introduced to their new sibling by their foster mother, only to learn that she has a terrifying secret.”
I really cannot wait to see this (fingers crossed it plays at my local theatre) and hopefully have it scare the shit out of me!
Another trailer I saw 5 times during my Halgonian Lynch Expedition was ‘Friendship’.
“A man tries to befriend his charismatic new neighbour, but it soon threatens to ruin both of their lives.”
The trailer looks absolutely insane and is hilarious. A bunch of my friends are Tim Robinson fans (I don’t think I’ve seen any of his shows) so I’m really hoping this plays at our local theatre so we can have a laugh-out-loud movie night.
I don’t really care for this wave of newly public-domain characters being turned into bad horror movies, with the sole exception of this one.
‘The Ugly Stepsister’ did not appeal to me at all when I first saw the poster drop online because I figured it would be a shitty, gorey ‘Cinderella’ rip-off.
“In a fairy-tale kingdom where beauty is a brutal business, Elvira battles to compete with her incredibly beautiful stepsister, and she will go to any length to catch the prince’s eye.”
It wasn’t until I heard horror royalty, Dead Meat, praise the film on their Overlook Film Festival recap podcast that I decided I need to see this movie. It drops May 9th on Shudder and I will be watching on day 1, baby!
The summer of ‘Fear Street’ is one I will never forget- I think it was the last time I was happy with something Netflix had done. ‘Fear Street: 1994’, ‘Fear Street: 1978', and ‘Fear Street: 1666’ each releasing on 3 consecutive Fridays for 3 weeks.
I don’t know about anyone else, but I’ve was patiently waiting for another trilogy like that to drop, maybe detailing the histories of the other killers we saw in the 3 films? After teasing new entries in both 2022 and 2023, R. L. Stine announced ‘Fear Street: Prom Queen’ in January of 2024.
The film drops on Netflix (heavy sigh) on May 23rd and I will probably have to trick my family’s Netflix account into thinking I still live at my childhood home so I can watch it from the comfort of my own house. Should I try and read the book before it comes out? I haven’t read a book since 2019 so maybe it would be a fun challenge.
I <3 WEEKLY RELEASE TELEVISION SHOWS
Nathan Fielder is my hall-pass and celebrity crush. So I was VERY happy that after ‘The Curse’ he was doing another season of ‘The Rehearsal’. It’s 2 episodes into the season as of writing this, and I cannot wait to see the rest cause it’s already pretty batshit crazy, jaw-dropping, shocking, and hilarious.
‘The Rehearsal’ Season 1 and 2 are streamable on Crave (in Canada) or (HBO) Max in the USA.
I have never played a ‘The Last of Us’ game, nor did I have much interest in it until the HBO show was released. I did a weekly recap & review podcast for season 1 on YouTube back in 2022 when the first season was releasing, but I decided to just “enjoy” the second season for myself.
It’s pretty good so far- I have no frame of reference for the second season besides spoiling myself on someone’s future offspring that I’m sure will be joining the cast later this season (or even next season?).
I’m interested to see if after Season 2 if the show will take a break till ‘The Last of Us: Part 3’ is announced and/or released, or if they will go off on their own sans-source material like ‘Game of Thrones’ did.
‘The Last of Us’ Season 1 and 2 are streaming on Crave in Canada and (HBO) Max in the USA.
I’ve seen a lot of praise for ‘The Studio’ since it started airing on Apple TV a few weeks ago and I cannot wait to dive into it! From what I’ve seen, it looks like the show has a lot to say (and a lot to poke fun at) about the current state of entertainment productions.
I even saw someone call it the new ‘The Simpsons’ cause it predicted a project about the Jonestown Massacre/Kool-Aid (‘The Studio’ said it would be a movie, but IRL it will be a TV series) helmed by Bill Hader and Daniel Zellman.
‘The Studio’ will be at the top of my list once I get back in to my brother’s Apple TV account, where the show is streaming.
I don’t want to set my personal watchlist goals too high this month because I never meet them. But this seems like a healthy amount to watch, and I hope it’s helped you find something to subside your scrolling for 30 to 120 minutes!
Let me know what’s on your May 2025 watchlist! Check out my Letterboxd to see if I actually watch any of these!

I've been so excited about The Ugly Stepsister! I'm hoping it's as good as I'm hearing
